Transfer Overview

The Terry Foundation is not taking applications for the 2020 cycle of Terry Scholarships for transfer students. The Terry Foundation has issued the following statement:

As of March 17, 2020, the Terry Foundation’s Board of Directors has determined that we will not offer any new Transfer Scholarships for the 2020-2021 academic year. While we deeply regret having to take this action, it is a necessary step to ensure that the Foundation may continue awarding scholarships into perpetuity.

Students transferring to UNT are eligible for scholarship funding through the Terry Foundation. The Terry Transfer/Non-traditional Scholarship totals approximately $13,000 per academic year (depending on the Cost of Attendance) and is renewable for up to six semesters of undergraduate study. Current UNT students are not eligible for the Terry transfer scholarship.

UNT will review all applications and nominate transfer students for the Terry Scholarship. From these nominees, the Terry Foundation will award up to six transfer scholarships for the academic year.

The deadline for transfer student applications for the 2020-21 academic year is April 19, 2020.

To qualify for the Terry Transfer Scholarship, a student must:

  • be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • be a current, continuous* resident of the State of Texas for at least three years at the time of application.
  • have completed at least 30 hours of transferrable post-high school (no dual-credit hours accepted) credit in residence** at a Texas college or university*** at the time of application.
  • be accepted as a full-time, non-freshman student at UNT beginning in the summer or fall semester of the year awarded.
  • be at least 20 years of age by May 1 in year of application.
  • have not attended a Terry-affiliated university.
  • have not interviewed or been selected for a Terry Scholarship (traditional or transfer).
  • have not received an initial university degree from a country outside the U.S.

*Such time outside State of Texas while on active duty in uniformed service of the U.S does not count against continuous residence.

**The 30 hour requirement must be earned in residence. Online courses from an accredited institution that result in transferable hours may count towards the 30 hour requirement if they are earned while in residence at a Texas college or university.

***The requirement of a “Texas college or university” allows transfer from a four year university, community college or junior college located within the State of Texas. Transferable credits earned at a duty station while on active duty as a member of a uniformed service of the U.S. will count towards the 30 hour requirement.  An applicant who is currently attending, or has previously attended a Terrry-affiliated university will not be considered for a Terry Foundation Transfer Scholarship.

Selection Criteria

The University of North Texas will recommend candidates to the Terry Foundation, who will review the nominations and interview candidates before making awards. The selection criteria used by the Foundation includes financial need, academic achievement, and demonstrated leadership potential. Although financial need is an important factor in the selection process, a student need not qualify for federal assistance in order to meet the Terry Scholar selection criteria. Please know that the University of North Texas serves as a nominating body only; all final decisions regarding scholarship awards are made by the Terry Foundation.

The Terry Foundation does not accept applications directly from students. Further information about the Terry Foundation may be found at their website.
